Welcome
This Web site has been developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers as part of the community outreach effort associated with the Five-Year Recurring Review process currently in place. It provides information about the military and civilian history of the Camp Elliott area, and describes the review and remediation process for Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS). The site will be updated regularly with notes about current Five-Year Recurring Review activities, and information about opportunities for members of the community to provide their input to the teams conducting the reviews and to participate in other significant local events. The Tierrasanta and Mission Trails Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) project areas were once a part of the former Camp Elliott, located in San Diego County, California, on land that was part of the original Rancho de la Mission San Diego and the El Cajon Rancho. The Tierrasanta FUDS is roughly defined by the current community of Tierrasanta (refer to project map). For more than 40 years, the Camp was used for artillery, anti-aircraft, and machine-gun firing practice. As a result of those military training exercises, munitions and ordnance (including unexploded ordnance) remained on the property when the Camp was closed in 1961. Since that time, over 5,000 ordnance items (small arms and larger munitions) and nearly 25 tons of ordnance debris have been removed from Tierrasanta and Mission Trails. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) continues to monitor Mission Trails and Tierrasanta at least every 5 years to determine if the actions taken in the past remain protective of human health and the environment. Five-Year Recurring Reviews are currently in progress for Munitions and Explosives of Concern Response Actions at the Tierrasanta and Mission Trails project areas. These current efforts include tasks such as evaluation of new information and technologies, historical document reviews, site visits, community presentations, and the development of Work Plans, Recurring Review Reports, and Community Involvement Plans. You are also invited to contact project representatives directly with your comments and questions. Additional details about these and other project activities for the Tierrasanta project site, and information about opportunities for public involvement, are presented in the Current Project section of this Web site.
